EL HOMBRE INMACULADO
(THE IMMACULATE MAN)
by Ramón Ferreira
at the
XIX INTERNATIONAL HISPANIC THEATRE FESTIVAL
The U.S. premiere of Ramón Ferreira’s EL HOMBRE INMACULADO opens and closes the 19th International Hispanic Theatre Festival at Teatro Avante, 245 Alcazar Avenue, Coral Gables, with performances on June 4, 5, 19 & 20, 2004. Cara de Plata by Valle-Inclan, produced by Al Suroeste Teatro, from Badajoz, Spain, previosly announced to be the Festival's closing play, will not make it to Miami "due to political reasons".
Adapted and directed by internationally acclaimed Argentine director Alberto Félix Alberto, this is the first Teatro Avante production to be staged by a guest director from abroad.
El hombre inmaculado takes place within a traditional family, one in which every member fights passionately for what he or she believes, with unintended yet inevitably tragic consequences. Ideological fanaticism, left or right, spawns fratricidal struggles that devastate humanity.
RETURNING/APPEARING:
Mario Ernesto Sánchez (Inocencio). After more than 8 years working in film and television, Mario Ernesto returns to the Miami stage playing the difficult leading role in El hombre inmaculado.
Edna Schwab (Amada). Edna returns to Miami’s Hispanic theatre as Inocencio’s wife after having performed almost exclusively in English since 1990.
Yvonne López Arenal (Alicia). After many years on the stage in Los Angeles, Yvonne performs for the first time in Miami under the auspices of Teatro Avante, playing Inocencio’s sister-in-law.
Gladys Cáceres (Herminia). A veteran stage and television actress, Gladys joins Teatro Avante’s artistic team for the first time in the intense role of Inocencio’s mother.
Kevin Varel (José Luis). Though he has been in several plays, Kevin has always performed in English. He makes his debut on the Hispanic stage playing Inocencio’s son.
Verónica Lucía Sánchez (Ana María). Before going to Gainesville to continue her college studies, Verónica graces Teatro Avante’s stage as Jose Luis’ fiancée, a role that marks her fourth acting appearance in Miami.
The production boasts a set designed by eminent Spanish sculptor Fernando Cid de Diego (Scene Stealer Design), lighting by Alberto Félix Alberto, period costumes by Anylú Oms and soundtrack and sound effects by Gabriel Lizárraga.
El hombre inmaculado was performed in Spanish with English supertitles for Miami-Dade County students May 17-28. Teatro Avante is the only bilingual participant in the Miami-Dade School Board’s Outside Agencies Program and has been getting young people involved with the theatre since 1995.
“We are honored to enjoy the support of the School Board and all its members, who continue to introduce Miami-Dade’s young people to the performing arts through a program as essential to the community as this is,” said Mario Ernesto. “The staging of such plays as El hombre inmaculado fills a great void in the Miami stage by exposing our youth to great Spanish-language theatre.
El hombre inmaculado will be performed four times at the Festival, on June 4, 5, 19 & 20, at Teatro Avante, 235 Alcazar Avenue, Coral Gables, between Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Salzedo Street, four blocks north of Miracle Mile. Parking is available on the street, across the street from the theatre and on Municipal Lot #6, on the corner of Salzedo and Alcazar.
